Axesstel put us up to two major challenges when designing a new usb modem for them: How do you create a striking design for a product segment that should make as little fuzz as possible, and how do you manage to break out from an established format without “breaking” it?
We decided to go for an iconic approach while still communicating the purpose and functional value of the product rather than its technological excellence. The styling was kept simple and “natural”. The one exception was the swirling connector lid that added some physical interaction to the product and provided protection.

We didn’t want to focus the design story on the protective cover, but rather find a shape that is immediately recognized and also tells something about its function. That is why we bent the dongle to point at the sky. The subtle motion to the hull makes this modem very easy to distinguish in a sea of dongle-shaped gadgets, and at the same time it communicates the purpose of the product — having a great connection.
